Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)

Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) / Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

A JHA and JSA serve the same purpose just with a slightly different name. A JHA is an easy and effective way of identifying hazards for specific jobs or tasks. A JHA involves watching a worker performing the task, breaking down each job into steps, analyzing the hazards present at each step, and developing controls for those hazards. A JHA should be performed for all jobs (prioritize high risk first), any new jobs, for any new process of performing a job, for new equipment, after an indicent (including a near miss), as well as minor infrequent jobs. The benefits of performing a JHA are that it allows employees to contribute and demonstrate their experience, it increases job knowledge to those participating, it raises safety and health awareness, and it improves communication between workers and supervisors.

To help get everyone started here are a couple different JHA Templates and a sample JHA.

Critical Job Inventory

A Critical Job Inventory allows you to evaluate the probability of an incident occuring by identifying the hazards present, rating the task by the potential severity, the probability of an incident occuring, and the frequency at which the job is performed in an eight hour day.
